How long do plant tags last outdoors in Australian conditions?

It depends on the tag material. Our NX range (0.25mm) is rated up to 12 months outdoors. The FX and SX ranges (0.35mm) are rated 12 months or more. Our PX range (0.58mm) is our premium tag, rated at 2+ years outdoors even through a proper Australian summer. All are printed using thermal transfer ribbon, which is UV-resistant and weatherproof.

What is the difference between direct thermal and thermal transfer printing?

Accepted Answer

Direct thermal printing uses heat-sensitive paper with no ribbon. It is simpler and cheaper, but the print fades quickly in sunlight and heat, making it unsuitable for outdoor plant tags. Thermal transfer printing uses a ribbon to transfer ink onto the tag material, producing a print that is UV-resistant, weatherproof, and suitable for outdoor use. For any tag going outside, thermal transfer is the correct choice.

Which thermal ribbon do I need for outdoor plant tags?

Accepted Answer

For tags that need to last more than six months outdoors in Australian conditions, a wax/resin or full resin ribbon is required. Wax-only ribbons are not UV-resistant and the print degrades quickly in sunlight. Innovative Tags supplies matched ribbons for every printer and tag material we sell.

What is the minimum order quantity for plant tags?

For thermal tags supplied on rolls (pot tags, tree tags, adhesive labels), there is no minimum order — you buy by the roll. For custom full-colour printed tags, the minimum is 24 tags per variety. This makes Innovative Tags a practical option for boutique nurseries and small growers, not just large-volume operations.

Do you offer a printing service if I do not have a printer?

Yes. Innovative Tags offers two printing services. Our thermal printing service covers single and double-sided pot tags, tree tags, and adhesive labels — you provide your plant names and data, we print and ship them ready to use. Our full-colour printing service covers pictorial pot tags and hang tags, die-cut stickers, POS signage, window decals, customer gift cards and store loyalty cards, and chemical and fertiliser labels. Minimum order for custom colour tags is 24 tags per variety.

Do you supply tree tags for forestry and revegetation projects?

Yes. Our TX wrap-around tree tag range is designed for long-life outdoor performance, with UV and weather resistance and a wrap-around format that stays secure on branches and stakes. Sizes range from 12.5mm x 125mm through to 25mm x 250mm. They are used by councils, forestry programs, revegetation contractors, and heritage tree projects across Australia.
